About
The ON-FIRE Study
ON-FIRE is a study involving people with a diagnosis of either behavioural variant Frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), or primary progressive aphasia (PPA), as well as age-matched healthy controls. bvFTD and PPA are different clinical syndromes of Frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Study Objectives

To establish a national network and collaborative platform for blood marker discovery in FTD; recruiting participants across the whole UK, in diverse healthcare settings.

To "fingerprint" inflammatory blood profiles in FTD, from diverse participants with "real-world" variation in clinical phenotype and ethnic, genetic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

To create an open international resource for FTD research, making data and samples available through the Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) and ON-FIRE Biorepository for other researchers.
About the conditions we investigate
Frontotemporal dementia
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a group of dementias that are characterised by changes in behaviour, language, and movement. People with these conditions are often diagnosed under 65 years old but FTD can also affect people at older ages. FTD is caused by progressive brain diseases, involving the accumulation of junk proteins and cell death in the frontal and temporal regions of the brain. FTD can manifest with different symptoms and syndromes, including behavioural (bvFTD) and language (PPA) difficulties.
